Job Purpose

Facilitate the transport of coal and by-products, manage the coal pile, and by-product handling and storage.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Facilitate the management of coal and by-products, including:
    1. Operate the equipment for the unloading of the coal train. This includes train car inspections and the operating of locomotive engines and coal handling/unloading computers.
    2. Perform coal and by-product sampling, dozing, loading, scooping, hauling and pile formation and/or removal.
    3. Operate MPW heavy equipment on public and private property. Perform vehicle inspections, troubleshooting along with completing all required documentation.
    4. Operate and troubleshoot dust collectors.
  2. Perform landfill inspections and maintain the landfill facilities.
  3. Accurately complete all environmental documentation.

Other Responsibilities

  1. Perform routine maintenance on heavy equipment as well as material handling and auxiliary equipment, in conjunction with Vehicle Maintenance. Document issues and report problems to immediate Supervisor.
  2. Make suggestions on system operation improvements.
  3. Acquire sufficient knowledge to fill the position of temporary Supervisor when appointed by immediate Supervisor.
  4. Maintain a culture of safety within the department. Support the Utility's safety programs, complete training appropriate for the position, and provide safe working conditions and practices.
  5. Maintain a culture of continuous improvement within the department. Utilize lean principles and other continuous improvement tools in an effort to maximize the efficiency of the department.
  6. Other duties as assigned, including being assigned to other areas as needed.

Qualifications

Knowledge

  1. High school graduate or equivalent.
  2. Experience operating heavy equipment associated with handling coal, limestone, and coal combustion residues (CCR) preferred. This includes, but is not limited to, dozers, end loaders, trucks, conveying equipment, dust suppression and collection equipment, fly ash silo and hydrobins, and train engines.
  3. Knowledge of, or ability to learn, operating railroad engines or locomotives within first 12 months in the position.

  1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with all audiences, including customers.
  2. Excellent interpersonal and listening skills, with ability to build productive professional relationships and promote a team atmosphere.
  3. Proficiency with use of computers, including email, calendar, Internet browsers, and the Microsoft Office suite of products at a basic level.

Other Position Requirements

  1. Must possess a valid driver's license and obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within 6 months.
  2. Must be able to work rotating shifts.
  3. Must be able to attend work on a regular basis and work overtime as needed. Relief operators do not have a set schedule or work hours and must remain flexible to allow for the coverage train arrivals and vacancies as they occur.
  4. Must maintain a method of communication in order to be contacted by MPW outside normal work hours.

Work Environment

  1. Work environment is primarily in an industrial coal-fired power plant. Primarily outside in all weather conditions at the generation site or CCR landfill.
  2. Must be able to climb ladders, climb continual flights of stairs, and walk on open grating at high elevations is required.
  3. Must be able to perform the following regular and repeated physical tasks: shoveling, lifting, pulling, pushing, rodding, jackhammering, moving trash pumps, etc.
  4. Must be able to comply with the requirements of the Respiratory Protection Program.
  5. Must be able to become certified in CPR while in the position.
  6. Must be able to work in confined spaces.
  7. Must comply with all safety and site rules at all locations.
